Oh it looks exactly the same, but they’ve finally replaced the engine! And transmission! For 2020 it gets a new 3.8L V6 with an additional 49 hp as well as a 9-speed auto. Same exact chassis though...

It’s the same motor and trans that’s going to be in the 2021 redesign right?* It’s an interesting concept; test out your now systems one at a time instead of whole hog into a new model.
* Assuming Nissan sticks to their plans with every thing going on, and assuming the human race makes it that far.....

Yeah, that’s my understanding. I feel pretty sure i’ve seen a car company do this in the past, but i can’t for the life of me think of an example, so maybe i’m wrong .
I’d have to imagine it’s a little bit restrictive for the new chassis design, or alternatively the new engine design. On the other hand, it’ s going to be really cool for Frontier enthusiasts (if they exist) a few years from now if they want engine swaps for their current chassis trucks.

Right now, I would not be surprised if the 2021 model year gets skipped entirely and pushed to 2022

It l ooks like you still have to remove the intake manifold to replace the spark plugs.

I’d much rather have 280 horsepower and 300lb-ft in a truck than 300 horsepower and 280lb-ft.
But, horsepower sells...

mustang did it the other waya round, redid the body first THEN did the motors

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! The Frontier that my employer had me driving as a work truck was far from perfect. But I’d take it any day over the Colorados in the fleet. I can’t help but fear that the next Frontier is going to be more Colorado-like in all the wrong ways (too big for a “small” truck, compromised visibility, touchscreen, etc.).

Heh, now that you mention it, that might be what i’m thinking of!

I would too, but in this case, it’s 260 horsepower and 280lb-ft vs 310 horsepower and 280lb-ft of torque.
If torque is going to stay the same, i’m all for another 50 hp.

Frontier is on the same Y62 platform as the Armada/Patrol...is it not?

I’m not an expert on Nissan trucks, but I thought the Armada was based on the bigger Titan pickup truck.
Edit: Hmm looks like i was thinking of the first generation Armada. The current one is indeed based on the Patrol.

Man, every time I see a 2010 advertised as having a 5.0 I die a little inside.

It used to be kind of a tradition in Detroit not to redesign and reengineer in the same year.

In that case...the Frontier could potentially take the Armada & Patrol's V8. And given what the Saudis do to those V8s...!

It is not. It’s on the same platform as the 2005-2011 Pathfinder. That said, that Pathfinder had the 5.6L V8 later in the production run, so swapping one into a Frontier wouldn’t be a big deal .

Goodbye manual transmission. It was a good run.
